Painting table is clean once again.
Here you have 10 warriors of Minas Tirith. Two of them are the conversions you can see on the article below, the other 8 are archers from the boxed set. You can also see my first dwarves from the range. I´m completely in love with them and will paint a few hundred I´m sure (they are so easy to paint too!). Boromir with the huge standard is one of those figures I had laying around for ages, and finally he´s ready for the battlefield. As usual, you can already find these figures in their respective galleries.
What I´m missing here from the project sidebar is an Indiana Jones figure I did. It was a birthday present and I couldn´t photograph it before giving it to my friend. I´m hoping he will take some pics soon and I will share them here.
Next up we have some more warriors of Minas Tirith, a couple of uruk-hai fanatics, a complete (yes, complete) Warmaster High Elf starter army and some scenery I´m making for some LotR games to come.
This article shows how to make a quick and easy conversion with plastic figures. The point is to create two new figures only working with a sharp knife and glue. No putty and no strange materials other than a couple of basic ones. No sculpting at all.
Este artículo te mostrará cómo hacer una fácil conversión con figuras de plástico. El objetivo es crear dos nuevas figuras solo utilizando una hoja afilada y pegamento. Nada de masilla ni otros materiales excepto los más básicos. Y por supuesto nada de modelado.
I got two plastic warriors of Minas Tirith in a lot of LotR figures I got online. The lot also contained a complete Return of the King set, full of these figures. But these two lonely guys, a warrior and an archer, stood there all alone and primed black. So I decided to turn them into a captain and a standard bearer for the rank and file in the sprues. Yes, I know GW makes not one, but two blisters of metal captains and standard bearers. But I have none, and this looked like a nice chance to add some unique figures to the warriors of the citadel.
Hace poco recibí dos guerreros de Minas Tirith en un lote de figuras de SdlA que conseguí online. También incluía una caja básica del Retorno del Rey que está llena de estas figuras. Pero estos dos solitarios, un guerrero y un arquero, estaban allí imprimados en negro. Así que decidí convertirlos en capitán y portaestandarte para guiar al resto de las tropas. Si, sé que GW no hace solo uno, sino dos blisters de capitanes y portaestandartes de metal. Pero por el momento no tengo ninguno de esos modelos, y esta parecía la oportunidad de sumar dos modelos únicos a los guerreros de la ciudadela.

* The two figures. A plastic warrior and a bowman.

* A plastic sword, I got it from an old Mordheim sprue. You can use pretty much anything or even make a little sword out of plastic bits.
* Una espada de plástico que saqué de una matriz de Mordheim. Podés usar cualquier cosa realmente, o inclusive hacer una pequeña hoja de espada con una pieza de plástico.
* A pike or similar rod for the standard. I used an ECW metal pike I had laying around.
* Una pica o cualquier cosa similar para mástil de la bandera. Yo usé una pica de metal de la Guerra Civil Inglesa que tenía por ahí.
* Sharp knife and glue.
* Cuchillo y pegamento.
So, I wanted to turn the archer into a captain and the warrior into a standard bearer. Why is that? Well, it might look easier to turn the warrior into a captain, but the archer would look extremely weird as a flag bearer. So I went the other route. You will see one figure has very little work on it, while the other has some more. The whole process didn´t take me a whole hour I assure you. Trying to remove the swordsman´s shield (to give it to the captain) was going to be messy and quite ugly without resculpting a bit of the arms. So a simple arm switch is in order!
Ahora quería convertir al arquero en un capitán y al guerrero en portaestandarte. Pero, ¿por qué? Bueno, parece mucho más fácil convertir al guerrero en capitán, pero el arquero luciría bastante raro como abanderado. Así que fui por otro camino. Vas a ver que una de las figuras necesita poquísimo trabajo, mientras que la otra un poco más. Todo el proceso no me tomó siquiera una hora. Intentar quitar el escudo del guerrero (para dárselo al nuevo capitán) iba a ser difícil y sucio necesitando un poco de modelado, así que simplemente intercambié los brazos completos.
Remove the left arms at roughly the same point. The arm with the shield is simple. The bowman´s arm needs a bit more work. First thing is cutting the bow that´s sculpted behind the figure´s feet. Once that´s free you can remove the arm. That arm is now cleaned of any traces of the longbow and ready to receive the banner pole. Standard bearer almost done. Really! Just drill the hand, slide the pike or whatever and glue the whole thing to the swordsman. Now just paint it and make the flag!
Cortá los brazos izquierdo más o menos en el mismo punto. El brazo con escudo es simple. El brazo del arquero necesita un poco de dedicación. Lo primero es recortar el arco que está unido a los pies de la figura. Una vez que eso está hecho, se puede quitar el brazo. Luego se limpia el brazo de cualquier rastro de arco y está listo para recibir el mástil. El portaestandarte está casi completo. ¡En serio! The captain though needs a bit more work. First you need to remove the remaining traces of longbow from the figure. Then remove the quiver with the arrows. Be careful not to mess with the figure´s hand. Remove it slowly, leaving more plastic, like doing it in slices. This will allow you to resculpt the segments of the figure´s armor (that was below the quiver) with the sharp knife. No other tools needed! Finally remove the sword´s hilt from the figure´s sheath in the back. Remember, he will be holding it in his hand now.
El capitán sin embargo, necesita un poquito más de trbaajo. Primero hay que quitar todo rastro del arco de la figura. Luego remover el carcaj con las flechas. Tené cuidado de no arruinar la mano de la figura. Hay que removerlo de a poco, dejando siempre un poco de plástico de más, haciéndolo por capas. Esto te permitirá “modelar” las placas de la armadura que hay debajo sin utilizar nada más que la hoja afilada. Finalmente, quitá el mango de la espada que está envainada detrás. Recordá que ahora tendrá su espada en la mano.
That´s really the end of the hard work. Now attach the shield arm and put the sword on the figure´s right hand. See? He doesn´t look strange at all. In fact it´s a very nice pose which would be very difficult to manufacture as a (one piece) plastic kit.
Allí termina el trabajo duro. Ahora simplemente hay que pegar el brazo con el escudo y poner la espada en la mano derecha. Y no luce para nada extraño. De hecho, es una linda pose que sería casi imposible de producir correctamente en una sola pieza de plástico.
